Circular Business Models

The Nordic countries have unique positions of strength, a wide range of biological resources from land and water, high technological knowledge, a competitive industry, and a well-educated population, to take a leading role towards a circular economy. These strengths can be utilised to ensure rapid adaptability, and improve our global market opportunities and competitiveness.

Besides upholding the ambitious goals of the Paris Agreement in 2030 to reduce CO2 emissions, the Nordic prime ministers have the vision of the Nordics becoming the most integrated and sustainable region by 2030. One of the action areas is the adoption of circular business models by Nordic companies – improved resource efficiency is a means to enhance emission abatement, reduce extraction, improve biodiversity and improve security when materials are kept in the region.

Circular business models are a necessity for building resilience in the Nordic region. This is also clearly shown in the Sustainable Development Report 2022 where Nordic nations scored highly for their overall performances within the 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs) agenda. Out of 193 countries compared, Finland is first for the second year, followed by Denmark in the second position, Sweden in the third, Norway in the fourth and Iceland in the twenty-secondth position.
