Smart Connectivity & Mobility

Smart Connectivity is one of eight initiatives launched by the Nordic Council of Ministers in 2021. The programs represent a determined advance towards a stronger and more sustainable Nordic region and support the vision for the Nordic region to be the most sustainable and integrated region in the world by 2030.

Smart Connectivity - 5G in action: The Nordic region is one of the most innovative and digitalised regions in the world. As the development of fifth-generation wireless systems (5G) breaks through globally, the Nordic countries are at the forefront of that development to become world leaders in using 5G technology for the development and digitalisation of all sectors of society. To achieve this goal, the Prime Ministers of Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland and Iceland have signed a Letter of Intent committing to creating the public sector conditions required for 5G and digitalisation in the Nordics. Cooperating closely to set up a common action plan for early adoption of 5G technology across the Nordic region. The Nordics have a long history in telecommunications with giants like Nokia and Ericsson; Finland and Sweden are considered two of the most advanced information societies in the world.

Mobility in action: Mobility is key in making the Nordic region the most integrated and sustainable region in the world. Sustainable mobility could refer to emission-free, carbon-neutral and even environmentally friendly mobility, with decarbonising as a first step. The future of mobility solutions should be accessible, affordable, seamless and integrated, addressing people’s wants and needs. With smart infrastructure and technology, cities can become better places to live.

To reach this vision, the Nordic transport ministers have developed a framework for future transport policy cooperation and selected sustainable mobility as the main pillar. Today, both mobility and Nordic collaboration are higher on the agenda than ever before. In addition, Nordic companies and joint Nordic innovation projects have a proven track record of generating value and impact within the field of mobility. It expanded collaboration and innovation, learning, and inspiration - and showcased how Nordic cooperation adds value to both individual actors, Nordic business and society as a whole.

Here are some recognitions that strengthen Nordic’s position as a global leader in smart city development:

  • Nordic cities (Helsinki, Oslo, Stockholm, Copenhagen) are amongst the Top 50 Smart City Governments rankings published by Eden Strategy Institute – for advancement in technology adoption and government’s efforts to bring the city population along their digitalisation journey.

  • For two years in a row, the Nordic cities (Helsinki, Oslo, Stockholm, Copenhagen) were ranked top smart cities in the IMD-SUTD Smart City Index (SCI) 2020 and 2021. The index ranks cities based on economic and technological data, as well as by their citizens’ perceptions of how “smart” their cities are.
