Life Science & Health Tech

A broad approach to life science and health tech enables new value chain networks and an ecosystem that spans a broader scope. This supports innovation and contributes to solving the system-level challenges that our societies are experiencing.

On a global level, demographic challenges have a major impact on health care systems. Like many other countries, the Nordic countries have a growing proportion of elderly people and an increased prevalence of lifestyle and chronic diseases. The high quality of Nordic data is a competitive advantage internationally and is an enabler for the Nordic region to take lead in personalised and health care services. Nordic collaboration about sharing data for innovative companies would benefit ecosystems across borders. Building on existing Nordic collaboration, also across sectors, is important to optimise the impact of the collaboration.

On top of that, the Nordic Council of Ministers has set a vision by 2030 for the Nordics to be the most sustainable and integrated health region in the world, providing the best possible personalised health care for all its citizens. Nordic cooperation is key to maintaining its position as a global frontrunner and reaching this vision.

A recent Worldview national ranking of health biotech sectors also has shown the growing strength of the Nordics as a leading life sciences hub. Judged on five pillars of data, Sweden ranks second, Denmark fifth, Finland ninth and Norway thirteenth. Meanwhile, Iceland ranked first in the sub-category of nations with no headquartered biotech companies listed on stock exchanges.
